Transmission Maintenance Tips for Vehicle Longevity

Do you think about your vehicle transmission much? Be honest! However, it is a vital component but one that’s often overlooked until problems arise.

At North West Transmissions, we know how critical regular maintenance is for keeping your transmission in top shape and ensuring your vehicle performs efficiently. Here are some tips on transmission care which might just save you needing repair or replacement in future.

  1. Check and Change Transmission Fluid Regularly

As you of course know (!) transmission fluid is essential for lubricating the gearbox’s moving parts, this in turn reducing wear, and maintaining smooth shifts. Over time, this fluid can become contaminated and lose effectiveness. We recommend checking your vehicle’s transmission fluid levels regularly – ideally as recommended in your owner’s manual (or check online by punching in your car details into google and asking how often checksd are needed). If there is a burning smell or rough gear shifting then it is time to check too.

  1. Avoid Overloading Your Vehicle

We all head off on holiday occasionally or, perhaps less pleasurably, to the recycling centre with a laden car. However, regular hauling of heavy loads places strain on the transmission, particularly if you often haul a trailer. This can cause the transmission to overheat and wear out prematurely. Stick to your vehicle’s recommended load capacity – it isn’t there just to annoy you, it is what your car can handle. Transmission cooler can help if you must haul heavy loads, though this really is only to mitigate the problem not fully solve it.

  1. Be Mindful of Driving Habits

Aggressive driving, this including such as rapid acceleration and hard braking can place strain on the transmission. In traffic, lots of starting and stopping, rather than trying to maintain a low speed and keeping moving, leads to wear too. Smoot steady driving is best for the transmission, feels nicer and gets you there just as quickly too.

  1. Get Regular Transmission Inspections

Regular inspections can detect early signs of wear or minor issues that could develop into major problems. If you have any concerns mention when getting a service too. You will know how your car usually feels so trust your gut, if it is andling differently, perhaps a bit jerkier or gears slipping then get it checked out.

  1. Don’t Ignore Warning Signs

A transmission that is struggling will often give clear signs, these can include unusual noises (grinding or whining), fluid leaks, or a dashboard warning light. Ignoring these can result in severe transmission damage. So, don’t ignore!

  1. Be Cautious with Transmission Software Updates

Many modern vehicles rely on transmission control software to optimise performance and while updates to this software can improve efficiency but may also introduce new settings that can feel different while driving. If your car receives software updates, be aware that these may affect your transmission’s behavior and always consult your mechanic if it doesn’t feel right.

Keeping Your Transmission Healthy

Following these maintenance tips can help ensure your transmission operates efficiently and lasts. Routine checks, regular fluid changes, and addressing issues as they arise are simple steps that make a big difference.
